Advanced Development Workshop

ID2 Films LogoOver the last 15 years, Emmanuel has been actively involved with some of the best European training organisations, such as ACE (for producers), ARISTA (for producers, story editors and writers), and MOONSTONE (for writers and directors) as a supervising tutor, advisor, consultant and lecturer.

In 2001, Emmanuel designed his first 3-day advanced development workshop. Primarily aimed at experienced creative producers and development executives, our workshop can also be adapted for writers, as we did in 2008 for Ealing Studios or in 2010 for Screen Training Ireland, or with our Proficient Screenwriting workshop.

ACE transformed the design of their training course in 2009 to include a specially adapted version of ID2 Films Advanced Development Workshop for their producers, which triggered a very positive response.

Advanced Development Workshop

The design of the workshop is regularly updated and features the screening of dozens of film clips. Its documentation includes extensive notes, detailed scene breakdowns from produced scripts, extracts from out of print theory books, a list of recommended readings, and a collection of more than 300 produced scripts on CD-ROM!

This workshop is usually fine-tuned to the needs of a specific production company / regional agency / development funding body.

Here are a few testimonials about the workshop:

“Emmanuel’s 3 day advanced development workshop for Ealing Studios [in April 2007] was very useful and stimulating. I’m a big fan of Emmanuel’s teaching style because it’s non prescriptive and flexible – tools not rules as he always reminds us. All the feedback I’ve had from the writers who attended was extremely positive, I think they responded particularly well to the collaborativeatmosphere and interactive sessions”.

Sophie Meyer
Head of Development
Ealing Studios / Fragile Films

“Many thanks for such a stimulating and inspiring course.  The tools are already coming in extremely useful and I hope will transform my approach to any new project from now on”.

“I took Emmanuel’s Advanced Development workshop this year [2003] and I wholeheartedly commend it to producers and anyone connected with the development process. It is not an exaggeration to say that I learned more practical tools for working with scripts and writers in 3 days than I did in 3 years at the National Film & Television School.
This course goes well beyond the “gut reaction” school of script analysis and leaves behind most of the structural screen writing tools available “over the counter” in bookshops (you know the ones I mean…)
For anyone that’s undecided I would simply say: do it! I’m sure your writers will thank you for it in the short run, and you’ll have stronger scripts to take to the market in the long run!
Emmanuel is a highly motivating tutor, his boundless enthusiasm matched only by his deep knowledge of the subject”.

“Emmanuel is the right kind of teacher for inherently creative people.  He does not instruct, or impose, or prescribe.  He displays and explains a box of first-class tools, and encourages the writer to use the ones that suit the work in hand.  In this way the work is improved, and the writer gains confidence at the same time, which in turn leads to even better work. Emmanuel is very tall, but he never talks down to you.”

“I cannot thank you enough for such an extraordinary course full of so much wisdom mixed with a rare humility and delivered with real passion. The practical tools will be tremendously useful and the resources a huge bonus.”

Natasha Carlish
Independant Producer

“I have learnt more on this workshop than any previous development course that I have attended. It’s as if up to now I have been looking in through a window and now the door has been opened. I came away not just with an effective set of diagnostic tools but the confidence to approach script development in an enthusiastic and positive way.”
